WhatsApp is getting a new business directory feature

September 23, 2021

You’ll be able to find a range of small businesses near you.

WhatsApp has announced that they’ll be rolling out a new business directory feature which will allow users to find several small companies in their area. It can be compared to the traditional Yellow Pages phone book!

The feature was first tried in São Paulo, Brazil, reports Reuters, which Will Cathcart (WhatsApp CEO) says is, “…home to millions of small businesses.”

The feature contains a powerful search feature so that users can find exactly what they are looking for. They’ll be able to search for specific services they are looking for or for specific companies.

The business directory will be rolled out in Indonesia and India next. Both destinations are home to millions of small businesses who are set to benefit greatly from the WhatsApp update.

WhatsApp was initially not designed for eCommerce. But over recent months, they have sharply pivoted in this direction. A while back, WhatsApp started integrating Facebook Shops on the messaging platform. It also announced that it is working on adding in-app payment features to make it easier for users to shop directly in WhatsApp.

It is not yet clear exactly how the sign-up process for the new business directory feature will work. From what we understand, it will be a standard feature that all those who use WhatsApp business will be subscribed to, unless you opt out.

According to some reports, South Africa could get this feature by as early as December, depending on how WhatsApp’s roll out goes.
