Two friends have successfully developed an alternative to animal-based leather. By using Mexican cacti, they managed to create an animal-free leather. According to the designers Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez, Cactus Leather is very similar to animal-based leather in the sense that it is breathable, has the same feel and is just as versatile. They grow the cacti that they use to make the leather organically and say that it can be harvested every 6 to 8 months.
