TikTok user makes mash from a bag of Lay’s chips!

Professional chefs are saying this is madness.

A TikTok user has horrified the culinary world by making mashed potatoes from a packet of Lays chips. Eli, with the handle @alis_kitchen, cooks Lay’s chips in boiling water, drains them, then adds cheese.

The video has been watched almost 1 million times. Although TikTok has been responsible for some pretty decent food hacks recently, this one doesn’t seem to make the cut. Professional chefs have commented saying this is pure madness, adding that it looks like sludge and no patron will want to eat that.

In the video, one can see Eli add salt and vinegar to a pot of water for flavouring. Once the chips are added, he lets them boil until they start to lose their shape. When this happens, he gives the mixture a stir to make sure all the bits and pieces are nice and smooth.

At the end of the video, Eli takes a swig of the cooking liquid. As if that wasn’t traumatic enough, Eli then adds cheese and paprika as toppings to the mashed chips. He takes a bite and informs viewers that it’s “delicious”.

In the comments, many users didn’t agree with Eli that this is the next big thing in the world of food.  “No video has ever caused me more pain,” one said. Another commenter added, “This feels illegal to watch”.

Some chefs have told other publications that their colleagues have tried their hand at creating powerful mash from crisps. But most acclaimed chefs seem to agree that this idea won’t be featuring on Michelin-menus anytime soon.
