This local designer has also won a LVMH prize and scored a top 6 place in the Woolmark Awards recently.
Thebe Magugu needs little introduction in the local fashion scene. This acclaimed Kimberley-born designer has just secured a spot for one of her items in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art!
Magugu has previously won a coveted LVMH prize, becoming the first African designer and label to bag such an award. She also placed in the top 6 of the renowned Woolmark Awards recently.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art bought her “Girl Seeks Girl” dress from her A/W18 Home Economics collection. They said that they have bought it with the goal of preserving it as an example of contemporary design.
This collection is said to be the label’s most acclaimed collection to date. The dress was made in collaboration with Phathu Nembwili, who created the beautiful, original prints of the women featured on the fabric.
Magugu explained the relevance of the print on Instagram when announcing the news from the museum.
“A woman leans on to the shoulders of another, which – at a difficult time in South Africa’s current history – signifies that women really need one another now more than ever because there is clearly a war that rages against them.”
