Telegram scores 70 million new users after WhatsApp downtime

October 7, 2021

It’s the second time that WhatsApp issues have led to users making the leap to Telegram.

In case you missed it, WhatsApp was down on Monday as a result of a major DNS error at Facebook. Facebook itself and its other services, like Messenger and Instagram, were also affected in what is now being called the worst downtime in the social media giant’s history.

As a result of specifically the WhatsApp downtime, which lasted about six hours, Telegram bagged a whopping 70 million new users! Previously, Telegram also scored users at the expense of WhatsApp back when they introduced new privacy policies.

The outage left more than 3 billion users around the world without the means to connect as instantly as they would have liked. Facebook has been quite about the exact nature of the issues that caused the outage, but tech journalists have confirmed that Facebook basically deleted itself from the internet due to incorrect DNS settings being made live. This also caused their internal network to crash, making it difficult for employees to enter office buildings and contact co-workers on the day in question.

Telegram made a statement to confirm that the spike in 70 million new users is “a record increase in user registration and activity”.

Naturally, this kind of increase doesn’t come without a few glitches. Telegram explained that some users did experience slower speeds and they had to work hard to ensure their servers are able to handle the extra traffic, but they managed to pull it off.

Telegram’s CEO said that he is “proud of how our team handled the unprecedented growth because Telegram continued to work flawlessly for the vast majority of users.”

“For the new users I’d like to say this – welcome to Telegram, the largest independent messaging platform. We won’t fail you when others will,” he said, taking a jab at WhatsApp in their hour of need.
