Taxi strike underway in Gauteng

June 22, 2020

The strike is about ongoing lockdown regulations that are causing a shortfall in their income.

A major taxi strike is underway in Gauteng today. Major highways are being blocked by taxis and commuters are left stranded with no alternative way of getting to work. The strike comes as a response to the government’s ongoing lockdown regulations that are causing taxi owners to earn less income. The Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, has pleaded with the taxi association that now is not the time to go to war. He said that the government would offer a R1.1 billion bailout to the taxi industry. Despite these promises, taxis still went on strike today, claiming that the proposed bailout is not nearly sufficient.
