South African documentary “My Octopus Teacher” nominated for best documentary at this year’s Oscars

This week, the nominations for the 2021 Academy Awards have been announced. The locally-produced documentary, “My Octopus Teacher” has been nominated for Best Documentary this year. In this Netflix Original, Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed document filmmaker Craig Foster’s relationship with a wild octopus near False Bay in the Western Cape. The film follows Craig’s journey as he forms a lasting bond with the octopus for nearly a year. It already won a few awards in 2020 including two wins at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards for Best Science/Nature Documentary and Best Cinematography.
