The brand says that mothers are the “toughest athletes”.
Nike has dropped a new line of activewear that celebrates motherhood. The new clothes are made for pregnant women and the brand wants to celebrate “the toughest athletes” with them.
On Instagram, Nike released a 1-minute commercial for the new collection. It shows mothers who don’t let pregnancy stop them, in fact, it pushes them even harder. Nike filmed heavily pregnant women keeping at it, whether it be swimming, boxing or running.
The women featured in the video are Alex Morgan, Bianca Williams, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Nia Ali. Serena Williams, who iconically won the Australian Open in 2017 while expecting, is also featured.
The new range of clothes is designed specifically to help pregnant women get their exercise routines done comfortably.
The new range of clothes seems to come as a reaction to backlash Nike has received from pregnant women in the past. In 2019, Alysia Montaño published an article in the New York Times about how the brand mistreated her when she was expecting.
Since stories like the above one started circulating, Nike has shifted their stance. They now have a number of mommy athletes representing them and they are set to continuously roll out more maternitywear in the near future.
