It’s on track to become the most successful series on Netflix in history.
Netflix recently dropped a brand-new period drama, “Bridgerton”. The series is produced by industry stalwart Shonda Rhimes and is quickly becoming the most popular series Netflix has ever seen.
The show plays off during the Regency era in England. The story is based on eight close-knit siblings of the powerful Bridgerton family attempting to find love. It’s based on the novels by Julia Quinn. The show features a wide range of characters, each with their own backstory and plot, which makes for very interesting viewing. Bridgerton has been viewed by more than 63 million households since its launch on Christmas Day. Currently, it is the fifth-biggest debut show on Netflix. According to Netflix, however, if the show’s popularity continues on this trajectory, it will soon trump “The Queen’s Gambit” as the most-viewed series in Netflix history.
Netflix is probably very pleased with the success of the show, seeing as they offered more than $100 million to get Shonda Rhimes to join their company. Rhimes has been working at Walt Disney Co for years before her most recent move. She created shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal”. Apparently, Rhimes and her team, which includes her long-time colleague Chris van Dusen as director, have been working on this production for more than three years. Some critics have argued that viewership statistics the streaming service publishes is not to be trusted. Netflix counts anyone who watches two minutes of a program as a viewer. While this inflates its figures, the approach still offers more transparency than what most other streaming services providers, who count each click on a video as a view. Although not yet confirmed, reports are starting to emerge that indicate that Bridgerton will most likely receive a second season. It’s raging success justifies continuing with the story and there is still a lot of the plot to tell, if one takes the books as the blueprint for the show.
