New laws passed that mean restaurants need to pay staff more

January 22, 2021

This comes at a time when many eateries are struggling to keep their doors open due to lockdown regulations.

This week, new rules were passed that force restaurants to increase staff wages, provide them with bonuses and weekly payments for the washing of their clothes. There are many other levies included in the new legislation that force restaurant owners to cough up. It is estimated that the rules will lead to a 16% overall increase in overhead costs for eateries. This comes at a time when the industry is at its knees. Ongoing lockdown regulations, specifically the 21:00 curfew and alcohol ban, have caused a devastating drop in bookings. The restaurant industry has decided to start a legal battle to challenge the new rules. Many claim that they simply cannot afford to abide by them and keep their doors open at this stage.
