New flu from pigs detected in China

July 6, 2020

According to some, it might lead to a whole new pandemic.

Researchers have expressed concern over a new flu that was detected in pigs in China. It apparently has genetic similarities to the H1N1 virus which also spread globally in 2009. The virus has thus far only been found at pig farms, with not human-to-human transmissions reported yet. South Africa seems to be in a safe position though, as the country does not import swine from China. In fact, South Africa supplies many countries with swine itself. Ongoing research is being done on the new flu to stop it in its tracks.
