The pageant has been surrounded by controversy because it was held in Israel.

Miss South Africa, Lalela Mswane has been crowned the second runner up at this year’s Miss Universe pageant.

Unfortunately, her term has been surrounded by controversy after it was announced that the coveted pageant would be held in Israel. This even prompted the South African government to withdraw their support for the Miss South Africa initiative, who entered Mswane in the Miss Universe show.

There have been widespread calls for Mswane to boycott the pageant as a sign of solidarity with Palestine.

From the outset, Mswane stood by her decision to continue with the Miss Universe pageant. On numerous occasions, she stated that her withdrawal would not help the situation between Israel and Palestine in any substantial way.

On stage, Mswane wore a white dress which was meant to represent “the dove of peace”. She has said that this, in turn, describes the nature of South Africa as a forgiving nation. She also wanted to emphasise the spirit of Ubuntu by wearing this specific outfit.

The winner of the Miss Universe pageant was India’s Harnaaz Sandhu.

The event had a total runtime of 3 hours and this was the 70th instalment of the global competition.
