Listen to a new cover by Post Malone

February 26, 2021

“Only Wanna Be With You” dropped yesterday ahead of ‘Pokémon Day’ where Posty will be performing.

Post Malone has surprised fans with a brand new cover release yesterday. The artist dropped his rendition of “Only Wanna Be With You”. The song was originally performed by Hootie & The Blowfish.

Posty released the track ahead of ‘Pokémon Day’ – a celebration marking 25 years since Pokemon Red and Green came out. Post Malone will be headlining the virtual event that viewers from all over the globe can watch between Saturday and Sunday.

The rendition of the song is pretty faithful to the original, with absolutely no changes to the lyrics. Some fans are of the opinion that Post Malone missed an opportunity to insert at least one Pikachu reference, but this is to no avail.

The event also has a trailer featuring Posty, in which the musician undergoes an unnerving CGI transformation.

It’s not all that clear why “Only Wanna Be With You” has been selected as one of the songs that will be performed at ‘Pokémon Day’. The only connection we could see is that the track was released in 1995 and Pokémon came out in 1996, making both 90s creations.

Speaking about his upcoming performance, Malone said in a statement: “I’ve been a Pokémon fan for a long time, so the opportunity to headline the ‘Pokémon Day’ concert celebrating 25 years is awesome.”

Apparently, Post Malone’s involvement in the ‘Pokémon Day’ event is part of a partnership between the animated franchise and the Universal Music Group. The parties have said that even more surprises and collabs might be on the way in 2021, similar to the upcoming one featuring Malone.
