LinkedIn ditches stories on their platform

The feature will be removed by the end of September.

Eager to join the recent trend towards stories on social media, LinkedIn only recently unveiled stories on their platform. Now, it has announced that it will bid the feature goodbye by the end of September.

Part of the reason for the shutdown is that LinkedIn learned users just didn’t want disappearing video.

“In developing Stories, we assumed people wouldn’t want informal videos attached to their profile, and that ephemerality would reduce barriers that people feel about posting,” Li said. “Turns out, you want to create lasting videos that tell your professional story in a more personal way and that showcase both your personality and expertise.”

This move follows a similar decision by Twitter to shut down its story-like feature back in July. Twitter observed that users didn’t respond to ephemeral video in the way it had wanted.

Some experts are of the opinion that these two shutdowns are signaling something bigger might be happening. The two shutdowns could signal a broader pullback from ephemeral video products among social media companies.

In other news, LinkedIn is reportedly working on a Clubhouse-like feature which should be available for testing soon.
