Hundreds of people left homeless after fire tears through informal settlement in Paarl

About 400 people are displaced as a result.

At least 400 people are displaced and homeless after a devastating fire tore through the informal settlement called Drommedaris in Paarl over the weekend.

Over the course of the past few days, firefighters have been battling to get the blaze under control. According to a News24 report, 60 firefighters, eight firefighting vehicles and two helicopters were trying to put out blazes on the slopes of the Paarlberg.

Most of the damage was done on Saturday morning. Residents of Drommedaris have already started rebuilding their homes, but the reality is that many will be unable to put their homes back together.

Community leaders in the Paarl area have contacted the non-profit organisation, Gift of the Givers, in search of help during the Festive Season. Despite their offices being closed as of 15 December for their annual break, Gift of the Givers responded and they are providing relief in the form of nutritious meals, blankets, mattresses, water and hygiene packs to the victims.

“The past 21 months have been extremely challenging for the citizens of our country. There were no Christmas celebrations last year, as we were ravaged by an aggressive second wave of Covid-19 with deaths running into the hundreds.

“It seems that the residents of the Drommedaris informal settlement in Mbekweni, Paarl, are going to be deprived of another Christmas, as a devastating fire in the early hours of this morning destroyed 100 informal homes, and rendered 400 people homeless,” said Gift of the Givers in an Instagram post.
