Fire in the Cape Winelands is still spreading

March 1, 2021

It has now reached areas that firefighters are battling to get to.

A fire has been raging in the Cape Winelands for more than a week now, destroying more than 13 000 hectares of vegetation. Firefighters have been working around the clock to stop the spread of the fire, but this has proven difficult. Yesterday, Cape Town saw temperatures of well over 37 degrees, which fueled the fire even more. Now, it has spread into areas that firefighters cannot easily access, making their efforts all the more difficult. At the moment, their main concern is to keep flareups and fires away from residential and commercial properties. It is expected that the operation will likely continue well into this week. Rain is expected later on too, which should help to stop the blaze significantly.
