Some municipalities could be left without electricity of they don’t pay their debts
This week, Eskom will clamp down on municipalities who have not paid their debts to the power utility. Since 2016, Eskom’s total municipal debt has grown by 35%. This could mean that some towns and cities could be without electricity until they make payment, should Eskom decide to cut their supply. On the other hand, municipalities have said that they cannot make payment due to their own financial struggles that can largely be attributed to the coronavirus.
