Eskom announces that stage 2 load shedding will continue indefinitely

January 18, 2021

The country has been facing rolling blackouts since last week.

Last week, Eskom announced that South Africa will be load shedding from Thursday until Sunday evening. Yesterday, they announced that the country will be placed on stage 2 load shedding indefinitely. Load shedding was introduced after Eskom’s newest facility, Kusile, lost some generation capacity. Eskom has cited COVID-19 as a factor affecting their operational capacity. According to their latest statement, at Medupi Power Station alone, 48 of their contractors tested positive for the Coronavirus. They have urged the public to reduce electricity consumption.
