The digital outfit was bought by an eCommerce store.
We all know that Dolce & Gabbana outfits don’t come cheap. In fact, on average they set you back about R45 000 a piece when you are looking to buy a real-life, physical suit from them.
Recently, though, the fashion powerhouse sold a digital suit for a whopping R18 million! The digital clothing item was bought by London-based eCommerce company, Boson Protocol. They now own the original file which shows a video of the suit being worn and modelled by a faceless mannequin.
The digital suit is woven with 72 embroidered glass workpieces, with both Murano glass and Swarovski crystal. The outfit is made from silk and features many different designs on it.
Although they only purchased the digital version for now, the company did nominate an employee to get measured for a physical version of the outfit.
What makes the digital version unique is that it was part of The Collezione Genesi collection designed by Italian fashion icons Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. All of the items in this collection were offered as NFTs (non-fungible tokens), which are digital tokens nowadays viewed as valuable pieces of art.
Dolce & Gabbana are one of the first leading fashion houses to enter the world of NFTs with their clothing designs.
Other brands, including the likes of Gucci, Burberry and Loui Vuitton have all announced NFTs will also be part of their upcoming collections.
