Covid vaccine could take years to reach SA

November 16, 2020

Pfizer recently announced that they have developed a vaccine that is 90% effective.

Although the world is excited about Pfizer’s news of a 90% effective COVID-19 vaccine, sceptics are not as confident that good news awaits South Africa any time soon. According to some critics, it could take years to roll out large quantities of the drug. Most developed countries have also already bought their supply, meaning that those who do not have access to capital to buy in advance will have to wait even longer as newer batches will need to be produced. Other drug companies are also working on vaccines. Johnson and Johnson, for instance, is working on one that will be produced in South Africa, which is likely to mean that the country can secure some of the first batches once it goes into production.
