Travel bans, school and border closures are some of the measures that were announced.
On Sunday, 15 March, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation with the government’s action plan to fight the ongoing coronavirus. He said that schools would be closed from Wednesday, 18 March until after Easter Weekend. Furthermore, 32 of South Africa’s points of entry have been closed off in a bid to better monitor and screen people entering the country. The president also placed a ban on all events where more than 100 people are expected to gather. He used the term “social distancing” and cited this method to be the best way to stop the rapid spread of Covid-19 in South Africa.
