It will let users report potholes and eventually, the app will notify other users of safety risks on the road.
The City of Johannesburg has joined forces with Discovery and Dialdirect to create a new app: Pothole Patrol.
As the name suggests, the app is meant to be used by users to report potholes in the Johannesburg area. The app uses geolocation technology to pinpoint the location of the pothole and the idea is that City officials can get to work repairing them as soon as possible.
Users also have the ability to track the status of their reports. This includes getting updates on when teams will be dispatched to repair the road in question all the way up until the pothole is actually filled.
To report a pothole, users will have to register an account, but unregistered users can also report road hazards. The benefit of registering is that you can track the status of your report, as mentioned above. Users can log a report and include images of the craters in a few simple clicks.
Potholes have become a massive problem in many parts of South Africa. They can cause serious damage to vehicles and they are often hard to detect at night or when it is raining. The City hopes that the app will make its job of filling potholes and maintaining roads easier.
Although this is not a feature just yet, it is suggested that the app will be expanded to notify other users of potholes in the area they are driving in. The aim if of course to ensure people do not cause unnecessary damage to their cars.
Users also have the option of reporting potholes via WhatsApp by messaging 084 768 4653.
