Cardi B becomes the first female rapper to get a diamond-certified song

March 12, 2021

Her track “Bodak Yellow” earned this award.

The 28-year-old artist, Cardi B, has made history in the music world after becoming the first female rapper to bag a diamond certification for one of her songs. Her hit “Bodak Yellow” recently received the certification.

Diamond status refers to the fact that a song or album has been sold 10 000 000 times and counting. The Recording Industry Association of America is the body responsible for dishing out these awards. Only a few songs in the world have scored this status, so Cardi B is really among a very select group of musicians.

Cardi B took to social media to announce her excitement over the news. She said, “I just want to say thank you guys so much because, without you guys, it wouldn’t have happened. It really made my day. And it really uplifted me.”

On Instagram, she also shared a clip of her record label (Atlantic Records) surprising her with a diamond plaque as a symbol of the achievement.

The rapper also spoke briefly about the challenges female rappers face in the music world. She said that she feels people are waiting for artists like her to fail, but when the opposite happens, it is very rewarding.

Previously, her song, “WAP” was the first song by a female rapper to go 5 x platinum status.
