Ministers confirmed that even in the face of a Covid-19 spike, the regulations are unlikely to become more stringent.
South Africa has passed the 70 000 mark when it comes to the coronavirus infection rate in the country. Many South Africans have become concerned that this might cause lockdown regulations to become more strict, seeing as many have become used to the relaxed regulations under level 3. Over the weekend, Jackson Mthembu, minister in the presidency, said that the government currently has no plans to review its relaxed lockdown rules and does not plan to reintroduce a countrywide ban on the sale of alcohol at this point in time. He added that this week, the National Command Council will discuss reopening sit-down restaurants and lifting the tobacco ban, based on the evidence placed before it by experts.
