The evening was held at the end of Africa Month and showcased local flavours and clothes.
Kobo Cuisine and Zyle Clothing hosted a special dinner during the last week of Africa month. The event was meant to be the meeting place of African cuisine and fashion, held at the Johannesburg Culinary and Pastry School.
Zyle Clothing showcased some of their latest blankets, which are all inspired by South African cultures – one with a hoodie inspired by the Venda culture, a cape blanket inspired by the Ndebele’s and another one that honours the Khoisans.
Phuzmile Ntuli, founder of Zyle Clothing, said that she took inspiration from a host of different cultures. She wanted to feature some of the most important and noteworthy values of the different cultures in her blanket designs, while also sticking to the colours they use in their traditional clothes as far as possible.
While the blankets were on display, the chefs in the kitchen were hard at work preparing a 7-course African meal.
The dishes consisted of fish and chakalaka pillow, chicken liver pate, and chicken giblets and feet terrine. Some courses even featured Rooibos and snoek – trying to get as many local flavours in the mix as possible.
According to the organisers behind the event, the idea was to create an evening that is totally dedicated to the talents of African creators, whether they be chefs or designers. They wanted to position African cuisine and fashion as completely worthy trends that can contend on the international stage.
