The FBI has issued an official warning that this new video conferencing threat is dangerous to internet security.

The FBI has issued an official warning for internet users to be careful of a new form of cyberthreat called “vishing”. Vishing refers to a form of cyber security breach that happens through video conferencing platforms. Hackers call employees on apps like Zoom or Google Meet and pretend to be from the company’s IT department. Employees are then asked to provide certain permissions to the hackers so that they can “fix” issues and perform “updates”. Once they receive these access permissions, they have free reign to steal corporate data and personal information of users. Remote workers have been urged to clear any IT support requests with their managers before allowing anyone access to their computers.
